Fairbridge Festival 2012

What a wonderful celebration we had at Fairbridge Festival on the weekend! It was absolutely amazing to team up with such talented and passionate musicians for the Festival's 20th anniversary and speak the poetry I wrote about the festival based on reflections sent in by long-time Fairbridge lovers. I am so grateful to the gorgeous, gifted and inspiring Parissa Bouas for having the foresight to see what this collaboration could become and inviting me on board. Thanks to everyone who made it happen, to my friends (old and new) for supporting me and to God for giving me creativity!

I will always remember this night!

I thought I might do something a bit different and post the words for the poetry I spoke over the choir! Here goes:

we're going to Fairbridge
how do we get there?
no need for maps any more
coz they're drawn on our palms
and we just drive to the drumbeats
in time with our hearts
and when we feel we're near the crescendo
we then know we're only a stone's throw
from the growth of hope and open arms of harmony
so we approach Fairbridge from all over the globe
we don't need to plot the course or coordinates
we're just going home

children pitch their tents here as soon as they can walk
and they're taught to sing and celebrate as soon as they can talk
young musicians are encouraged and nourished
in an atmosphere where even the deaf can hear the flourish
of flutes and tambourines as the tunes of jamboree
dance across the landscape and music climbs the trees
that's why come flood or fire
the old and young raise their voices and join the choir

for twenty years we've come as followers and fans
to hear our heroes and beloved bands
for twenty years we've been weaving a community
with threads of melody wound tightly into a symphony
a twenty year synergy of instruments and energy
will forever be living in everyone's memory
Fairbridge, you've given us twenty years of love and laughter
and your echoes will be heard for many years hereafter

Fairbridge Festival Finale (alliteration and awesomeness)

The Festival finale choir

Join a star studded cast onstage to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fairbridge Festival.
Dear singers and festivalights,
Many thanks to all the people who wrote in and shared their fond memories of times at Fairbridge Festival. Kate Wilson, poet, and I thouroughly enjoyed the process of reading your stories and transforming them into poetry and song. We hope you will also enjoy hearing the fun little ditty we’ve come up with for the Festival Choir to sing at the big finale on Sunday night at this years Fairbridge Festival.
The Festival Choir is seeking participants, preferably with some choir experience, and men are always welcome. (We are singing a South African version of Forever Young and really need some strong Basses for that to sound great!)
Our special guest soloists include: Kavisha Mazzella, Carl Panuzzo, Ros Barnes and Bunbury poet, Kate Wilson.
This choral extravaganza is limited to only 80 people, as unfortunately, that is all the stage can hold. If you are interested, please send an email to Monica Lacey to register your interest asap.
...
All the best!

IMAGINE Forum and Zonta IWD Breakfast 2012

A big hello to all who saw me at the IMAGINE Body Image forum on the 10th and the Zonta breakfast on the 11th!

Many of you at the breakfast were asking for a copy of my poem 'Reflection', so here it is on YouTube:

Be sure to watch 'Sisterhood' and 'Just Dance' on my YouTube channel, as well as some of my other poetry. My channel is: www.youtube.com/user/kwp03t

I'd love to stay in touch with you all, so please pop your email address into the mailing list form on the right hand side of the page so I can update you on upcoming performances, videos and news. (Don't worry, I won't bombard you with emails, only a few throughout the year!) And feel free to email me with any feedback, questions or to book me for a performance at your school or event!

To purchase my CD or chapbook, follow the 'cd & chapbook' link at the top of the page.

So glad that we could share these fantastic experiences! Let's keep building up and inspiring our sisters, and do our bit to nurture and empower the next generation of change makers!

Unexpected Perfection

Tonight was one of the best nights in a long time!

I was supposed to be going to the Perth Writers Festival this weekend but changed my mind at the last minute.

So instead, I asked my friend Matt, who is part of an awesome choir called the Spooky Men of the West, if I could come to their gig at The Music Shack near Donnybrook on Saturday night.

It was sold out - but... Matt said he could get me in if I would perform some poetry as a kind of impromptu support act. That's gotta be the biggest win-win of the year so far.

The Spooky Men were wonderful as always, not only in their slightly unsettling and yet joyously entertaining stage presence and deep, enchanting voices, but it's also such a pleasure to talk and laugh with these gentlemen, and some of the after-show-supper-goers had the honour of being serenaded in a sandwich of sound... and to be honest I am still processing this experience! There may be a poem brewing...

A big thank you to Vince and Judy Evans and everyone who helped make the night come together, kudos to Matthew and all my Spooky friends, and a great big hug to the brilliant audience who brought so much warmth and heart along with them and made the night such a beautiful celebration.

This was my first gig for the year! What a great way to kick things off. I have plans to tour the South West, then head to Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania (at least!)...

Stay tuned. :)
